Important Transitions In Retirement With Tom Goglia

Today we’re talking about what you need to know before starting the transition into retirement, and we brought on a guest with a unique and valuable perspective on the topic – Not only is Tom Goglia an excellent retirement coach, he’s currently transitioning into retirement himself.

For many people, retirement is sudden. One day I’m working, the next day I’m retired. But a lot of things change physically, mentally, and emotionally when we retire, so a lot of things can go wrong if we don’t make a more intentional transition into retirement.

DISCUSSION TOPICS

  • Shifting identities and staying engaged in retirement
  • How retirement affects your relationships
  • Adopting an attitude of resiliency
  • Moving locations and downsizing your space in retirement
  • Why there’s sometimes a reluctance to work with a coach (and why being proactive doesn’t mean something’s wrong)

ENJOY YOUR LONGEVITY: THE NEW RETIREMENT

The New Retirement is different than what we experienced with our parents, and as longevity increases, people don’t just stop working.

And if you’re going to do something in retirement, whether you have to make the money or you just want to stay engaged, why not try your best to find something that you enjoy doing? Finding that role can can add a lot of meaning and fulfillment in retirement, and a coach can help you do that.

AN EXERCISE TO HELP YOU MAKE THE MOST OUT OF YOUR RELATIONSHIPS

When people get towards the end of their life, they very rarely say I wish I had more stuff – it’s always I wish I could have spent more time with the people that matter most.

And we need to be proactive about doing this.

Tom went through this exercise with his kids, and we recommend you do the same with the people who matter most in your life.

  • Sit down, one on one, with a person who matters to you.
  • Ask them to visualize this scenario question: You are standing over my grave. What goes through your head when you say, “I wish we had done _____?” or “I wish we could have experienced _____?”
  • Ask them to think about the question, talk about it – and then do it!

This can be a difficult exercise to do, but it’s really valuable. One of the most valuable investments you can make is memorable experiences, and this exercise will help you identify those experiences.
