The retirement resource- winnning the mental game of retirement

Winning The Mental Game of Retirement

Today’s topic is often overlooked, but very real – and it has just as much, if not more, to do with the transition planning and the strategy for a successful retirement than your income plan or tax strategy.

So today we are breaking down the seven key investments to winning the mental game of retirement.

 1. Identity – Who are you without your job? A lot of people don’t think about it, and they’re supposed to be having the best time of their life because they’re no longer working, but they’re depressed. So do the work up front.

2.  Relationships – Who are the people you feel closest to outside of the workplace? Are you investing in those relationships? Are you intentionally being social? And are you considering how retirement will affect your relationship with your partner?

3.  Experiences – What kinds of activities give you the greatest enjoyment? Planning activities can be one of the biggest things you can do to have a meaningful, fulfilling retirement, and transition more successfully. Create experiences, intentionally, that involve the people you care about the most and things you enjoy doing.

4.  Satisfaction – Is there a gap between what you have and what you think you should have at this point in life? What are the things you can do, with the clarity you have around the situation as it is, to make life as enjoyable and meaningful and fulfilling as possible?

5.  Health – What are you doing to protect your primary asset? Good health is highly correlated with retirement satisfaction. Be proactive, not reactive.

6.  Meaning – What is your life purpose? Is there something to reconnect with that used to really light you up, something new that intrigues you, or something you always looked forward to doing? The more of those we can build into your retirement strategy, the more successful, the more happy, the more fulfilled, and the more meaningful retirement is going to be.

7.  Peace of MInd – What is keeping you up at night? The key is to address and resolve things that are stressful now, instead of sticking our head into the sand and allowing them to get worse.
