The Retirement Resource - Your Legacy and True Wealth

Your Legacy and True Wealth

Robert Laura – a retirement activist committed to changing the way people think about and prepare for every aspect of retirement and the Founder of the Retirement Coaches Association – joins us to talk about a very important topic: your Legacy.

We don’t just mean your financial legacy (the assets you will pass on), but your values, your beliefs, and stories that are important to you. These are the kind of things that create meaning and fulfillment, and at the end of the day, that’s what people are really looking for in retirement.

  • Why The New Retirement is really a series of retirements, not one single transition.
  • What your Legacy is (beyond the assets you pass on).
  • How you can pass on true wealth.

Regardless of how much you plan or what documentation you put in place to pass on assets to future generations or heirs, it won’t matter if you don’t pass on your values, beliefs, and other things that are important to you.

One of the things that Bob likes to say is that “passing on wealth won’t always ensure wisdom… But passing on wisdom gives an heir, a beneficiary, the opportunity to develop wealth, or at least maintain the wealth.”

Your values, beliefs, and stories are True Wealth – and passing that on is more valuable than any assets or cash.

So collecting and documenting these things should be a big part of your retirement planning process. As an added bonus, when you start to think about what’s important to you and reminisce about your stories, it brings something alive in you. So, especially for people transitioning to retirement, it can really recharge you and give you valuable direction.

Bob created a free tool that can help you with this process: The Legacy Notebook, which you can find by visiting

“The process is designed to nourish your inner needs and celebrate the person you have become. Your values will encourage and inspire future generations. Your life lessons will guide current and future loved ones and your knowledge of family history will serve as a foundation for things to come.”
